What’s new at BA: sustainability special

We’re sponsoring a mental health project, Drug of Art, teaming up with Energy Garden to promote climate change solutions and helping you to become a more environmentally conscious traveller. Plus, our prize partnerships and new Speedbird Café menu options are revealed…

BA Better World backs exciting community initiatives
Our BA Better World Community Fund has a new partnership with artist Alison Lapper, MBE and her Drug of Art project. The project aims to showcase the positive power of creativity on mental health. Digital content, a podcast and an exhibition will feature her work alongside artists including Rankin and Marc Quinn, with a goal of encouraging young people to express their feelings through the medium of art. Lapper aims to combat loneliness through digital content, a podcast and free workshops that she runs together with her friend Rankin, the renowned photographer, taking place at more than 500 schools and youth groups across the country.  Plus, we’re sponsoring a competition that will give young people the chance to present their work at the exhibition alongside several international artists, including leading contemporary artist Marc Quinn.

Greening London’s Railways with Energy Garden
We’ve also partnered with Energy Garden, a non-profit organisation that redefines cities’ relationships with nature to transform new community gardens on the London Railway.

A new community garden along the London railway is being created by Energy Garden adding to an existing network of 26 gardens around the city. This new contribution aims to connect communities with nature, engaging 12,000 daily commuters and empowering youth in a training programme to tackle climate change locally. And it’s not only UK projects that we’re backing: we’re also helping you offset your carbon emissions, wherever your adventures take you. So how does it work? Recognised by scientists, governments and regulators, including the United Nations, carbon offsetting allows you to reduce environmental impact by supporting projects that help to lower emissions elsewhere.

We offset domestic flights at no cost to travellers, while short-haul flights in Europe can be offset on board via the Speedbird Café – simply add ‘Contribute to Carbon Offsets’ to your basket. Jetsetters can also use the carbon calculator, available for both short-haul and long-haul international flights. Head to our free .air Wi-Fi platform (or type shop.ba.com), where you can select the best option for you, either before or after travel.
