Kimpton, owner of the Hotel Monaco Washington DC, is known for its love of solo travellers – it once had a ‘Guppy Love’ scheme, with goldfish placed in single guests’ rooms. The fish are gone, but there are weekly bicycle tours led by the hotel’s manager. Alternatively, borrow one of the venue’s GPS units, pre-loaded with a huge selection of routes.

A health retreat in Germany

Described as a ‘clinic for therapeutic fasting and integrative medicine’, the lakeside Buchinger Wilhelmi health resort is less scary than it sounds. Guests can sign up for therapies including homeopathy, acupuncture, naturopathy and psychotherapy, and enjoy tailored meal plans and exercise regimes. There’s also a pool for relaxing early-morning dips.
