The world’s most liveable cities for 2016

Ever visited a city that tempted you to extend your trip? You’re not alone. We asked some of London’s most avid travellers for the places that would make them unpack their suitcases for good

Rio
1

Best for culture: Rio de Janiero

Says who? Madani Younis, artistic director at the Bush Theatre, London
“For me, Rio symbolises the spirit of ‘new Brazil’. My first visit was in 2005 as part of a cultural exchange programme, which highlighted how art can be a catalyst for social change. To get under the skin of Rio, I’d recommend seeing work produced by Afro Reggae and Nós do Morro. A few hours spent with either company will leave you feeling energised.”

NYC
2

Best for eating out: New York

Says who? Ben Tish, executive chef of Salt Yard Group
“You can’t beat New York for dining out experiences – from homemade breakfast waffles at Amy Ruths in Harlem, to the swanky ‘Oysters and Pearls’ chef’s menu at the elegant Per Se. And it’s not just eating out. While New Yorkers are not known for their enthusiasm for home-cooking, there are some great butchers in the city. I always try to stop off at the Esposito Pork Shop (pictured). Its signature provolone and parsley pork sausage is amazing.”

Vanc
3

Best for outdoors pursuits: Vancouver

Says who? Steve Backshall, naturalist, writer and TV presenter
“My first impression of Vancouver was superb. I walked down to the beach and saw bald eagles calling from the treetops, and sealions playing out beyond the waves. Visit the North shore, which is home to the finest downhill mountain biking on earth, or go jogging around the picturesque Stanley Park. After all that physical exertion, you’ve got to grab a honey lager at Granville Island Brewing, beneath Granville Street Bridge – it’s one of Canada’s first micro-breweries.”

SG
4

Best for kids: Singapore

Says who? Sarah-Jane Butler, founder of Parental Choice, an online advice portal for parents
“Singapore is a wonderful place for children, and they are welcomed everywhere. Plus, the public transport and taxi system make it easy and affordable to get around, and most places are readily accessible with pushchairs. You can also find plenty of great kid-friendy activities – from a trip to the Cat Café Neko No Niwa (home to 13 friendly cats), to an exciting night safari at Singapore Zoo (pictured).”

Austin
5

Best for nightlife: Austin

Says who? Iain Griffiths of the White Lyan bar, London
“Everyone is welcome in Austin – or at least that’s how it feels on a night out. I love the city’s cool, unassuming vibe. As well as the legendary music scene (there are over 200 live venues), there are some great bars and clubs. Start your night at The Townsend with bourbon cocktails and Austin dry cider, before heading over to Midnight Cowboy – a hip, reservations-only speakeasy bar. For late-night munchies, visit Bangers (pictured above). It’s an amazing sausage house which also hosts live bands.”
