The shopaholic’s guide to Madrid

Sometimes overshadowed in the shopping stakes by its European rivals Paris, London and Milan, Madrid is a strong alternative if you’re looking for something a little different. Renowned fashion blogger, Elena Vidal of Style in Madrid shows us the best places for urban chic

Shoes

In search of: Shoes

Where? IF Shoes
This tiny boutique (above) on Calle de Goya is the perfect place to find the most glamorous shoes from top name designers such as Nicholas Kirkwood and Rupert Sanderson, as well as colour-block bags from Parisian-born, Venezuelan designer Yliana Yepez. The owner knows everything there is to know about shoes.

In search of: Dresses

Where? Cosette
Channelling classic French style, independent clothing store Cosette sells some of the chicest outfits outside Paris. Create the perfect capsule collection full of Breton stripes, sharp tailoring and effortless dresses.

Retro

In search of: Vintage

Where? Pepita is Dead
Having a smaller budget needn’t mean sacrificing on style: fashion editors, bloggers and those in the know congregate here , where the clothes are all unworn (above), for a snapshot into the city’s history. Find an original dress in mint condition from the 1940s or a Prada handbag from the 1980s at a fraction of the original price. I’ve spent hours here, unearthing a hidden gem or two.

In search of: Toys

Where? Juguetrónica

For the latest, most-talked-about gadgets head to this futuristic toy store on Calle de Alberto Aguilera. Think circulating drones, zippy, remote-controlled cars, gangly Meccano robots and neon light sabres.

In search of: Make-up

Where? 20+tres
If you’re a manicure or pedicure addict look no further than this inventive outlet, with its rainbow spectrum of Essi nail polishes, on Calle de Sagasta. Drop in for a break between stores.

Rd

In search of: Labels

Where? Calle José Ortega y Gasset
For one of Spain’s best luxury shopping experiences, make a beeline for José Ortega y Gasset street, located in the most exclusive area of the city, stretching through the Salamanca and Lista neighbourhoods. The broad, tree-lined street is home to prim boutiques, mega brands Gucci, Chanel, Valentino, Hermés and Dior, plus Spanish fashionistas strutting their stuff.

Mercado

In search of: A pit-stop

Where? Mercado de San Miguel
Foodies need look no further than the huge 20th-century iron structure of Mercado de San Miguel (above), close to Plaza Mayor. It’s an architectural gem. Grab a bite on the go or linger a little longer and tuck in to some artisan deli items. This is also the place to find some of the best wine in Spain.
